Diphthongs – Vowel Teams that (usually) make new sounds

This is one section of a Phonics Kit that you can create. Many of the resources are provided by the websites below for personal or classroom use. See the full post for more resources!

Vowel Teams that (usually) make new sounds (diphthongs) AU/AW, OO/OO, OU/OW, OI/OY

These vowel combinations are (mostly) not short or long, but make completely different vowel sounds. (the last two pairs are formed with mouth positions that change, the definition of diphthong. The first two pairs can be considered to be vowel digraphs – two letters that combine to make one sound.)

Note that AU/AW is a diphthong that makes a Short O sound, and that OW can also make a Long O sound in some words (like know and blow).

WATCH Turtle Diary: AU/AW (3:53), OU/OW (3:51), OI/OY (4:06). Kizphonics: OI/OY (0:59), & OO (2:32). Hooked on Phonics Practice (2:04) Kids vs Phonics: OU (1:36), OW (1:54), OI (1:33), OY 1:40), OI & OY (3:13), OO (1:21), OO Long (1:44).

I enjoy finding great information, combining it in new ways, and packaging it creatively. I'm highly interested in the areas of goal setting, time management, and skills to improve life.
